Hans Thoma (1839–1924) war ein bedeutender deutscher Maler, der in der Zeit der Spätromantik und des Impressionismus wirkte. Geboren in Bernau im Schwarzwald, wuchs Thoma in einer handwerklich-bäuerlichen Umgebung auf, die seine künstlerische Entwicklung maßgeblich prägte. Ab 1853 absolvierte er eine Lithografen- und Malerlehre in Basel und schloss sich später der Münchener Künstlergruppe an.

From 1853, he completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer and painter in Basel and later joined the Munich group of artists.
